Huge game by Shand boosts Metro over Southern Tier, 6-3

Kevin Shand was all over the ice for the Metro Jets, as he tallied one goal and two assists in Metro's 6-3 win over the Southern Tier Xpress.

Shand scored 5:18 into the first period to make the score 1-0 Metro. Zachary Koonce picked up the assist. Shand dished an assist on Jacob Rutkoske's goal that made the score 2-0 Metro at 10:23 into the first period. He added another helper on Devin Kelly's goal that made the score 4-0 Metro at 9:12 into the second period.

The Jets pulled out the victory even though they were hit with 28 penalty minutes.

Metro forced Southern Tier's goalies to work without much rest, firing 33 shots and forcing 27 saves. Tyler Geloneck made 17 stops and Benjamin Sakaria made 10. The Jets' goal total was higher than their season average. Metro averages 3.7 goals per game. The defensemen of the Jets were also effective in the Xpress' zone, and came away with two goals.

Metro additionally got points from Kelly, who also tallied one goal and one assist and Jason Newel, who also racked up one goal and one assist. Metro also had goals scored by David Chavis and Cody Jones, who scored one goal each. In addition, Metro received assists from Andrew Sawyer, who had two and Alex Holm, Pearce Vance, TJ Krajewski, Spencer Graham, and Matt Dempsey, who contributed one each.

Southern Tier was held back by its power play unit, which tallied one goal on 10 chances. The Xpress' defensemen played an important role in the offense, chipping in two goals. Southern Tier was forced to rely heavily on their penalty kill unit throughout the game, as it racked up 30 penalty minutes.

The Xpress were helped by Niko Greco, who registered two goals. Greco scored the first of his two goals on the power play at 4:25 into the third period to make the score 4-2 Metro. Southern Tier had taken the advantage when Metro's Rutkoske got sent off for hooking. Elijah Williams provided the assist. Greco's next tally on the power play made the score 6-3 Metro with 3:05 left in the third period. Brandon Desrosiers picked up the assist. Southern Tier also got points from Desrosiers, who also had one goal and one assist. More assists for Southern Tier came via Jake Herrberg, who had one and Justin Andriaccio, who had two.

Jake Stephan made 23 saves for the Jets on 26 shots. Metro registered three goals on nine power play opportunities.
