West Michigan falls apart in second, loses to Toledo, 5-0

The West Michigan Wolves was within striking distance after one period, but the Toledo Cherokee put the pedal down in the second en route to a 5-0 victory.

Aaron Callan frustrated West Michigan's offense all game, and stopped 35 shots en route to a shutout. Callan certainly lowered his goals against average, which was 1.57 entering the contest.

The Wolves were doomed by their poor performance on special teams, as Toledo was able to score four times while on the power play.

The Cherokee's penalty kill was spotless, allowing no goals on six West Michigan power plays. Toledo's defense was surprisingly good. The Cherokee allow 2.2 goals per game.

Toledo was helped by David Bogart, who tallied one goal. Bogart scored on the power play 5:49 into the first period to make the score 1-0 Toledo. The Cherokee had gained a power play chance when Brandon Benaglio was whistled for cross checking. Cody Estrel assisted on the tally. Toledo also got points from Aaron Roschinsky, who also had one goal and one assist and Austin Turner, who also grabbed two goals and one assist. Toledo also got a goal from Tyler Zalecki as well. Other players who recorded assists for Toledo were Cam Schwartz, who had three and Dominic Pisanti, Tristin Snyder, and Jimmy Howell, who each chipped in one.

West Michigan's offense operated below its season average. The Wolves put an average of 2.9 pucks into the net per game. West Michigan's offense rang up 35 shots on Toledo's net.

The Cherokee incurred 14 minutes in penalty time with seven minors. Chase Stanford took the loss and made 13 saves before being replaced by Kyler Patenaude who made 12 saves. The Wolves incurred 20 minutes in penalty time with 10 minors.
