Helena beats Yellowstone 4-0 as Martens gains shutout

Grant Martens recorded a shutout against the Yellowstone Quake as the Helena Bighorns picked up a 4-0 win.

Helena's penalty kill excelled, as the Bighorns gave up zero goals despite allowing seven power plays.

Helena was often in penalty trouble, totaling eight minors and one major for 31 minutes in penalty time. The total exceeded the 23.0 minutes per game the Bighorns had been spending in the box. Helena stifled Yellowstone's power play, and did not give up a single goal while down a man. The Bighorns did not reach the goal total they have come to expect this season. Helena averages 7.0 goals per game. The Bighorns forced the Quake goalie Sean Leahy to work between the pipes, taking 42 shots.

Helena was helped by Nick Trefry, who grabbed one goal. Trefry scored 2:05 into the first period to make the score 1-0 Helena. Cody Vanthournout assisted on the tally. Helena additionally got points from Blake Babineau, who also racked up one goal and one assist to lead the team in points. Helena also had goals scored by Jay Forbes and Brandon Mills, who each put in one. In addition, Helena received assists from Brandt Miller, who had one and Kendall Bolen-Porter, who had two.

Yellowstone excelled on the penalty kill, not giving up a single goal in four chances. The Quake's offense rang up 32 shots on the Bighorns' net.

Helena's Martens stopped 32 shots out of the 32 that he faced. The Bighorns ran into serious disciplinary problems during the contest, and Vanthournout was ejected from the game. Leahy rejected 38 shots on goal for Yellowstone. The Quake incurred 12 minutes in penalty time with six minors.
