Southern Tier penalty kill dominates in 4-1 defeat of Pittsburgh

The Southern Tier Xpress, which found themselves down a man often, weathered the Pittsburgh Vengeance's power play opportunities and emerged with a 4-1 victory.

Southern Tier was sparked by Luke Grossman, who finished with one goal. Grossman scored 18:24 into the first period to make the score 2-0 Southern Tier. Brandon Desrosiers provided the assist.

The Xpress were ineffective while on the power play, as they were held to two goals off of nine man advantages.

Southern Tier also got points from Desrosiers, who also registered one goal and two assists and Luke Sunde, who also grabbed two goals and one assist to lead the team in points. In addition, Southern Tier received assists from Alec Hooper, who had two and Addison Collins, Cody Maulsby, and Aleksandr Koshelev, who contributed one each.

Pittsburgh's offense operated below its season average. The Vengeance average 3.5 goals per game. Pittsburgh's penalty killing units received substantial work throughout the game as the Vengeance finished with 28 penalty minutes.

Southern Tier's Matt Hatcher stopped 18 shots out of the 19 that he faced. The Xpress incurred 14 minutes in penalty time with seven minors. Kyle Plantz took the loss and made 20 saves before being replaced by Jacob Stack who made five saves. Pittsburgh registered one goal on six power play opportunities.
