West Michigan rides Vorva to victory over Wisconsin, 2-1

The Rink - B. Creek    Sat, Sep 13, 2014

The West Michigan Wolves relied on the sparkling performance of Hunter Vorva in net to grab a 2-1 win against the Wisconsin Whalers.

Wisconsin's power play was ineffective against West Michigan's penalty kill, which allowed zero goals while shorthanded.

The Wolves were sparked by Alex Olsen, who finished with one goal. Olsen scored short handed 18:22 into the third period to make the score 2-1 West Michigan. West Michigan found itself down a man on Devin Farkas's high sticking.

The Wolves' penalty box was a popular destination as the team totaled six minors and one major for 27 minutes in penalty time. West Michigan surpassed its season average of 22.0 penalty minutes per game. The Wolves put up an impenetrable defensive front on the penalty kill, and did not allow the Whalers to score on any of their six power plays. West Michigan's offense rang up 31 shots on Wisconsin's net.

Michael Tratar also scored for West Michigan. Other players who recorded assists for West Michigan were Brandon Benaglio, who had one.

The Whalers excelled on the penalty kill, not giving up a single goal in four chances. Wisconsin forced the Wolves goalie Vorva to work between the pipes, taking 38 shots.

The Whalers were led by Thomas Hanson, who scored the team's only goal. Hanson scored 2:31 into the first period to make the score 1-0 Wisconsin. Joe Perrelle assisted on the tally.
