Smiths Falls uses shootout to best Cumberland, 5-4 (1-0 SO)

Three periods of regulation and an overtime session were not enough to settle matters as the Smiths Falls Bears defeated the Cumberland Grads in a shootout 5-4 (1-0 SO).

The two teams needed six turns to complete the shootout.

Smiths Falls saw a two-goal lead disappear, but was able to secure the win in a shootout. The Bears made the score 4-2 on a goal by Cody Bean at 10:01 in the third period. Cumberland evened things up at 4-4 on a goal by Travis Douglas at 19:51 in the third period.

Smiths Falls put up an impenetrable defensive front on the penalty kill, and did not allow the Grads to score on any of their four power plays. The Bears' offense rang up 34 shots on Cumberland's net.

Smiths Falls was led by Michael McKenney, who registered one goal and one assist. McKenney scored short handed 17:11 into the second period to make the score 3-2 Smiths Falls. Brett Garvey assisted on the tally. Smiths Falls also got points from Bean, who also finished with one goal and one assist. Others who scored for Smiths Falls included Connor Cobbold and Taylor Henry, who each put in one. More assists for Smiths Falls came via Chase Hawley and Ryan Duhaime, who each chipped in one.

The Grads kept the Bears' goalie busy throughout the game, and Michael Pinios made 33 saves on 37 shots.

Cumberland was helped by Ted McCabe, who had one goal. McCabe scored short handed 19:16 into the first period to make the score 1-1. The Grads found themselves down a man on Douglas' cross checking. Joey Sollazzo picked up the assist. Cumberland also had goals scored by Zackhary Salloum and Thomas Mansbridge, who scored one goal each. In addition, Cumberland received assists from Matt Meininger, Cody Kyle, and Martin Frechette, who contributed one each.

Smiths Falls incurred six minutes in penalty time with three minors. Kevin Gollmer made 29 saves for Cumberland on 33 shots. The Grads incurred four minutes in penalty time with two minors.
