Carleton Place blows out Pembroke, 6-1

The Carleton Place Canadians were firing on all cylinders against the Pembroke Lumber Kings, and when the final buzzer sounded Canadians emerged with a 6-1 win.

Carleton Place was sparked by Connor Merkley, who finished with one goal and one assist. Merkley scored 14:18 into the first period to make the score 2-0 Carleton Place. Andy Sturtz picked up the assist.

Referees had their hands full with a major incident at 2:17 into the third period. Eight fighting penalties were dished out along with six game misconducts.

Both goalies were tossed from the game during the major incident in the third period.

The Canadians were often in penalty trouble, totaling seven minors and two majors for 24 minutes in penalty time. Carleton Place had been averaging 21.0 minutes in penalties per game. The Canadians forced Lumber Kings' netminders to work between the pipes, getting 40 shots and forcing 34 saves. Jordan Piccolino made 27 stops and Sean Green made seven. Carleton Place bested its season scoring average. This season, the Canadians average 3.9 goals per contest. Carleton Place took advantage of Pembroke's penalties, tallying three goals off of five power play opportunities.

Carleton Place additionally got points from Sturtz, who also grabbed two goals and one assist. Others who scored for Carleton Place included Willie Brooks, Alex Robinson, and Vinny Post, who scored one goal each. Other players who recorded assists for Carleton Place were David Eccles, Tyson Stewart, Craig Pefley, and Stephen Baylis, who each chipped in one and Wesley Baker, Adam Lloyd, and Jordan Larson, who contributed two each.

The Lumber Kings did not reach the goal total they have come to expect this season. Pembroke puts an average of 4.0 pucks into the net per game. The Lumber Kings were hit hard by penalties in the contest, and totaled eight minors and two majors for 26 minutes in penalty time.

Pembroke was led by Felix Chamberland, who scored the team's only goal. Chamberland scored on the power play 3:19 into the second period to make the score 2-1 Carleton Place. A holding penalty on Maxime StPierre had put the Lumber Kings on the power play. Anthony Nellis assisted on the tally.

The Canadians' starting goalie, Guillaume Therien, made 22 saves and finished with the win before he was taken out in favor of Adrian Clark, who stopped one shot. For Carleton Place, Guillaume Therien and Stewart were ejected from the contest. Pembroke registered one goal on four power play opportunities. Team's Ryan Casselman and Piccolino were slapped with misconducts and ejected from the game.
