Cumberland vanquishes Nepean in shootout, 6-5 (1-0 SO)Nepean Sportsplex Rink 1 Sun, Dec 14, 2014 Story by Narrative Science.
Three periods of regulation and an overtime session were not enough to settle matters as the Cumberland Grads defeated the Nepean Raiders in a shootout 6-5 (1-0 SO). The shootout featured six attempts between both teams.Cumberland overcame a two-goal deficit to capture the victory. The Grads was down 5-3 after a goal by Nepean's Zach Renfrew at 9:31 in the second period. Cumberland tied things up at 5-5 on a power play goal by Chandler Watson at 5:47 in the third period. The Grads was paced on offense by Watson and Tyler Pancel, who combined for seven points. Watson had one goal and three assists and Pancel also notched one goal and two assists. The Raiders were unable to stop Cumberland from sending pucks towards the net, and the Grads eventually piled up 35 shots on goal. Cumberland bested its season scoring average. This season, the Grads average 2.3 goals per contest. Cumberland took advantage of Nepean's penalties, tallying two goals off of three power play opportunities. Cumberland also got points from Zackhary Salloum, who also registered one goal and one assist, Pancel, who also racked up one goal and two assists, and Brandon Zullo, who also registered one goal and one assist. Cumberland also got a goal from Matthew Morin as well. More assists for Cumberland came via Branden Makara, Martin Frechette, and Peter Sigouin, who contributed one each. The Raiders forced the Grads goalie Kevin Gollmer to work between the pipes, taking 45 shots. Nepean was helped by Josh Zizek, who finished with two goals. Zizek scored the first of his two goals at 7:07 into the first period to make the score 1-1. William White picked up the assist. Zizek's next tally made the score 4-2 Nepean with 18:44 left in the second period. Renfrew provided the assist. Nepean additionally got points from White, who also grabbed one goal and one assist, Renfrew, who also racked up one goal and one assist, and Brandon Belding, who also tallied one goal and one assist. In addition, Nepean received assists from Devin Fullum, who had two and Cody Calcagno, Corey Tam, Jody Sullivan, Dakota Ford, and Mac MacSorley, who each chipped in one. Gollmer recorded 40 saves for Cumberland. The Grads incurred four minutes in penalty time with two minors. The Raiders' Leif Hertz stopped 29 shots out of the 34 that he faced. Nepean incurred six minutes in penalty time with three minors.
