Kanata falls apart in second, loses to Ottawa, 5-1

The Kanata Stallions was within striking distance after one period, but the Ottawa Senators put the pedal down in the second en route to a 5-1 victory.

Ottawa's penalty kill excelled, as the Senators gave up one goal despite allowing six power plays.

Ottawa was sparked by Johnathan Kovacevic, who racked up one goal. Kovacevic scored 7:31 into the second period to make the score 2-0 Ottawa. Jim Pearson provided the assist.

The Senators forced their penalty killing units to work especially hard during the game, picking up seven minors and one major for 19 minutes in penalty time. The total exceeded the 15.0 minutes per game Ottawa had been spending in the box. The Senators forced Kanata goalie Andrew Cipollone to work between the pipes, taking 33 shots.

Ottawa also got points from Joey Champigny, who also had one goal and one assist and Pearson, who also grabbed one goal and one assist. Ottawa also had goals scored by Connor Bebb and Alexandre Way, who each put in one. In addition, Ottawa received assists from Carl Faucher and Cody Bean, who each chipped in one and Robert Michel and Bruno Cheff, who contributed two each.

Ian Andriano made 17 saves for Ottawa on 18 shots. The Senators registered one goal on four power play opportunities. For Ottawa, Bebb was ejected from the game. Cipollone rejected 28 shots on goal for the Stallions. Kanata incurred 12 minutes in penalty time with six minors.
