Carleton Place hangs on, beats Cornwall 3-1

The Carleton Place Canadians beat the Cornwall Colts, 3-1, in a contest where the winning goal was scored in the first period but the game remained close throughout.

Willie Brooks provided Carleton Place with the game-winning tally when he scored 19:28 into the first period. The Canadians had taken the advantage when Cornwall's Ryan Patulli got sent off for hooking. Jordan Larson provided the assist.

The Colts were stymied by Carleton Place's netminder Guillaume Therien, who stopped 35 shots during the victory. Therien managed to improve on his goals against average, which stood at 2.05 prior to the game.

Cornwall's power play was ineffective against the Canadians' penalty kill, which allowed one goal while shorthanded.

Carleton Place's penalty killing units received substantial work throughout the game as the Canadians finished with 30 penalty minutes.

Carleton Place was helped by Wesley Baker, who grabbed one goal. Baker scored 1:09 into the second period to make the score 2-0 Carleton Place. Andy Sturtz picked up the assist. Carleton Place additionally got points from Brooks, who also tallied one goal and one assist and Sturtz, who also racked up one goal and one assist to lead the team in points. Other players who recorded assists for Carleton Place were Craig Pefley and Stephen Baylis, who contributed one each.

The Colts were held below their usual level of production. Cornwall puts an average of 3.2 pucks into the net per game. The Colts forced the Canadians goalie Therien to work between the pipes, taking 36 shots. Cornwall was forced to rely heavily on their penalty kill unit throughout the game, as it racked up 26 penalty minutes.

The Colts were led by Grant Cooper, who scored the team's only goal. Cooper scored on the power play 16:46 into the third period to make the score 2-1 Carleton Place. A harrassment of official penalty on Alex Robinson had put Cornwall on the power play. Marly Quince provided the assist.

Carleton Place registered one goal on five power play opportunities. Denny Dubblestyne recorded 24 saves for the Colts.
