Cumberland vanquishes Nepean in shootout, 5-4 (2-1 SO)Navan Memorial Centre Sun, Sep 14, 2014 Story by Narrative Science.
Three periods of regulation and an overtime session were not enough to settle matters as the Cumberland Grads defeated the Nepean Raiders in a shootout 5-4 (2-1 SO). The shootout featured five attempts between both teams. Nepean got a shootout goal from Felix Page. Cumberland's other shootout goal was scored by Tyler Pancel.The Grads forced Raiders' goalies to work between the pipes, firing 33 shots and forcing 28 saves. Will King made 16 stops and Leif Hertz made 12. Cumberland managed to stay out of the box better than usual, totaling one minor for two minutes in penalty time. The Grads finished below its season average of 11.0 penalty minutes per game. Cumberland's goal total was higher than its season average. This season, the Grads average 2.5 goals per contest. Cumberland was helped by Matthew Morin, who registered one goal and one assist. Morin scored on the power play 15:14 into the first period to make the score 1-1. The Grads had taken the advantage when the Raiders' Cameron Cook got sent off for slashing. Pancel picked up the assist. Cumberland also got points from Reid Murphy, who also had one goal and one assist and Travis Douglas, who also racked up one goal and one assist. Cumberland also got a goal from Cameron Roth as well. Other players who recorded assists for Cumberland were Maxime St.Pierre, who had two and Martin Frechette and Joey Sollazzo, who contributed one each. Nepean kept Cumberland's goalie busy throughout the game, and Paul Leger made 52 saves on 56 shots. The Raiders were led by Mac MacSorley, who registered one goal and one assist. MacSorley scored 2:39 into the third period to make the score 4-4. Luke McCaw assisted on the tally. Nepean additionally got points from McCaw, who also tallied one goal and one assist. Others who scored for Nepean included Diego Gagnon and Broydon Stufko, who each put in one. More assists for Nepean came via Chad Malinowski, Page, Brandon Watt, Dakota Ford, and Tristan Perreault-Gagnon, who each chipped in one. The Grads registered one goal on three power play opportunities. Nepean incurred six minutes in penalty time with three minors.
