Huge game by Salerno boosts Pickering over Milton, 6-1Pickering Recreation Complex Fri, Feb 20, 2015 Story by Narrative Science.
BJ Salerno was all over the ice for the Pickering Panthers, as he tallied one goal and three assists in Pickering's 6-1 win over the Milton Icehawks. Salerno scored 1:30 into the first period to make the score 1-0 Pickering. Mark Tenuta picked up the assist. Salerno dished an assist on Chris Sekelyk's goal that made the score 2-0 Pickering at 15:36 into the first period. He then added assists on John Hudgin's goal at 18:06 into the first and on Blake Coffey's goal at 12:07 into the second.The Panthers were led by goalie Austin Washkurak, who finished with 30 saves while allowing one goal. Washkurak managed to improve on his goals against average, which stood at 3.92 prior to the game. Pickering forced Icehawks' netminders to work between the pipes, getting 44 shots and forcing 38 saves. Cosimo Lazzarino made 11 stops and Scott Smith made 27. The Panthers excelled on the penalty kill, not giving up a single goal in three chances. Pickering found the back of the net more times than it usually has this season. The Panthers average 3.6 goals per game. The defensemen of Pickering were also effective in Milton's zone, and came away with three goals. Pickering additionally got points from Kyler Challis, who also registered two goals and one assist and Hudgin, who also finished with one goal and one assist. In addition, Pickering received assists from Cam Palmer, Daniel Barnes, Daniel Butchart, Justin Bennett, and Riley Devine, who contributed one each. The Icehawks were often in penalty trouble, totaling six minors and one major for 37 minutes in penalty time. Milton surpassed its season average of 21.0 penalty minutes per game. The Panthers were unable to stop the Icehawks from sending pucks towards the net, and Milton eventually piled up 31 shots on goal. Pickering totaled 13 minutes in penalty time with four minors and one major and went 1-for-7 on the power play. The Panthers ran into serious disciplinary problems during the contest, and Austin Ulett was ejected from the game. For the Icehawks, Chris Poletek and Brendan Doherty were ejected from the contest.
