Wellington blows out Whitby, 7-3

The Whitby Fury had trouble finding ways to stop the Wellington Dukes, which beat Fury, 7-3.

Joe McKeown was all over the ice for Wellington, as he tallied one goal and three assists in the win. McKeown scored on the power play 10:26 into the third period to make the score 6-2 Wellington. The Dukes had gotten the advantage when Whitby's Jeremy Wu was sent off for abuse of officials. Brody Morris provided the assist.

Referees had their hands full with a major incident at 17:07 into the third period. Four fighting penalties were dished out along with two game misconducts.

Wellington racked up the penalties in the contest, and ended with seven minors and one major for 29 minutes in penalty time. The total exceeded the 12.0 minutes per game the Dukes had been spending in the box. Wellington put up an impenetrable defensive front on the penalty kill, and did not allow the Fury to score on any of their three power plays. The Dukes kept Whitby's goalie busy throughout the game, and Tyler Feaver made 25 saves on 32 shots. Wellington's goal total was higher than its season average. The Dukes average 3.4 goals per game.

Wellington also got points from Will Cook, who also finished with one goal and one assist and Ben Sokay, who also registered one goal and one assist. Others who scored for Wellington included Nick Devito, who had two and Abbott Girduckis and Wes St Amand, who each put in one. In addition, Wellington received assists from Luc Brown, who had two and Jacob Panetta, Marco Azzano, Josh Supryka, and Brandon Kosik, who each chipped in one.

The Fury were often in penalty trouble, totaling 11 minors and one major for 47 minutes in penalty time. Whitby surpassed its season average of 17.0 penalty minutes per game.

The Fury were helped by Stefan von Engelbrechten, who grabbed one goal. Von Engelbrechten scored 6:10 into the first period to make the score 1-0 Whitby. Nik Coric assisted on the tally. Whitby also had goals scored by William Ward and Davis Kuksis, who scored one goal each. Other players who recorded assists for Whitby were Ryan Erickson, who had two and Austin Fischer, Jonathan OHara, and Matt Fischer, who contributed one each.

Daniel Potter recorded 27 saves for Wellington. The Dukes registered two goals on seven power play opportunities. Wellington ran into serious disciplinary problems during the contest, and Jacob Hetherington was ejected from the game. For Whitby, Fischer was ejected from the game.
