Pickering outlasts Whitby, 6-5Iroquois - Rink#1 Sun, Feb 01, 2015 Story by Narrative Science.
The game between the Pickering Panthers and the Whitby Fury was tight through all 60 minutes, but in the end Pickering emerged with a 6-5 win. Neither team gained more than a one-goal lead, and BJ Salerno's goal in the third period proved to be the difference maker. Salerno was all over the ice for the Panthers, as he tallied two goals and one assist in the win. Salerno scored the first of his two goals at 3:17 into the first period to make the score 2-1 Pickering. Salerno's next tally made the score 6-5 Pickering with 53 seconds left in the third period. Chris Sekelyk assisted on the tally. Pickering stifled Whitby's power play, and did not give up a single goal while down a man. The Panthers' goal total was higher than their season average. Pickering has scored at the pace of 3.6 goals per game during the current campaign. Pickering also got points from Doug Carter, who also had one goal and one assist and Sekelyk, who also racked up one goal and two assists to lead the team in points. Pickering also had goals scored by Aidan Parker and Riley Devine, who each put in one. In addition, Pickering received assists from Sean Power, who had two and Jordan Oshowy and Blake Coffey, who contributed one each. The Fury put up an impenetrable defensive front on the penalty kill, and did not allow the Panthers to score on any of their five power plays. Whitby was led by Ryan Kirkup, who tallied two goals and one assist. Kirkup scored the first of his two goals at 1:24 into the first period to make the score 1-0 Whitby. Austin Fischer picked up the assist. Kirkup's next tally made the score 3-3 with 11:42 left in the second period. Justin Brand provided the assist. Whitby additionally got points from Stefan von Engelbrechten, who also registered one goal and one assist and Nik Coric, who also had one goal and one assist. Whitby also got a goal from Kevin Dimagno as well. Other players who recorded assists for Whitby were Jonathan OHara, Jeremy Wu, Tyler Feaver, and Daniel Robertson, who each chipped in one. Austin Washkurak rejected 21 shots on goal for Pickering. The Panthers ended with 11 minutes in penalty time with three minors and one major. Pickering ran into serious disciplinary problems during the contest, and Kyler Challis was ejected from the game. The Fury's Feaver stopped 24 shots out of the 30 that he faced. Whitby incurred 12 minutes in penalty time with six minors.
