Trenton rides Kapelmaster to victory over Newmarket, 5-1

The Trenton Golden Hawks relied on the sparkling performance of Justin Kapelmaster in net to grab a 5-1 win against the Newmarket Hurricanes.

Trenton's penalty kill excelled, as the Golden Hawks gave up zero goals despite allowing seven power plays.

Trenton was paced by Braden Hellems, who registered one goal and one assist. Hellems scored on the power play 5:46 into the second period to make the score 2-0 Trenton. Zach de Concilys picked up the assist.

Referees had their hands full with a major incident at 13:00 into the second period. Four fighting penalties were dished out along with two game misconducts.

The Golden Hawks' penalty box was a popular destination as the team totaled eight minors and one major for 31 minutes in penalty time. Trenton surpassed its season average of 20.0 penalty minutes per game. The Golden Hawks stifled Newmarket's power play, and did not give up a single goal while down a man. Trenton forced the Hurricanes goalie Connor Ryckman to work between the pipes, taking 35 shots. The Golden Hawks' defensemen played an important role in the offense, chipping in four goals.

Trenton also got points from Loren Ulett, who also grabbed one goal and one assist. Trenton also had goals scored by Kevin Lavoie, Chrisitian Lloyd, and Matt Pizzo, who each put in one. In addition, Trenton received assists from Hunter Fargey, who had two and Tyler Donaldson, Blayne Oliver, Michael Siddall, and Bobby Polachek, who each chipped in one.

Newmarket racked up the penalties in the contest, and ended with nine minors and one major for 43 minutes in penalty time. The total exceeded the 16.0 minutes per game the Hurricanes had been spending in the box. Newmarket was held below its usual level of production. The Hurricanes put an average of 3.3 pucks into the net per game.

Newmarket was led by Adam Smith, who scored the team's only goal. Smith scored 24 seconds into the third period to make the score 3-1 Trenton. Curtis Harvey provided the assist.

Justin Kapelmaster made 25 saves for Trenton on 26 shots. The Golden Hawks registered four goals on nine power play opportunities. Trenton ran into serious disciplinary problems during the contest, and Luke Hincenbergs was ejected from the game. Ryckman rejected 30 shots on goal for the Hurricanes. For Newmarket, Brett Thomson was ejected from the game.
