Newmarket hangs on, beats Orangeville 2-0

The Newmarket Hurricanes beat the Orangeville Flyers, 2-0, in a contest where the winning goal was scored in the first period but the game remained close throughout.

Newmarket took over the lead for good with a goal by Cameron Nicoll at 4:17 in the first period. Ryan McReynolds provided the assist.

The Hurricanes were boosted by Connor Ryckman, who turned in a shutout with 50 saves. The solid play of Ryckman will be reflected in his goals against average, which pre-game was 2.99.

Newmarket was paced by Nicoll, who registered one goal.

The Hurricanes put up an impenetrable defensive front on the penalty kill, and did not allow Orangeville to score on any of its five power plays. Newmarket's offense rang up 35 shots on the Flyers' net.

Newmarket also got a goal from Sam Hu as well. In addition, Newmarket received assists from Christian Dedonato, Jonathan Colley, and Anthony Salemi, who each chipped in one.

Orangeville could not produce up to its normal offensive output. The Flyers put an average of 3.1 pucks into the net per game. Orangeville forced the Hurricanes goalie Ryckman to work between the pipes, taking 50 shots.

Newmarket incurred 10 minutes in penalty time with five minors. Wyatt Pickrell rejected 33 shots on goal for the Flyers. Orangeville incurred four minutes in penalty time with two minors.
