Whitby wins tough contest against Burlington, 4-3

The Whitby Fury gutted out a close 4-3 win against the Burlington Cougars.

Neither team gained more than a two-goal lead, and Scott Kirton's goal in the third period proved to be the difference maker.

Whitby was sparked by Kirton, who registered one goal and one assist. Kirton scored 13:37 into the third period to make the score 4-3 Whitby. Kevin Dimagno provided the assist.

In a losing effort, Burlington was led by Willy Paul, who had two goals. Paul scored the first of his two goals at 8:08 into the second period to make the score 2-2. James Thorpe picked up the assist. Paul's next tally made the score 3-2 Burlington with 17:03 left in the third period. The Cougars had gotten the advantage when the Fury's Ryan Sarris was sent off for fighting. Nicholas Holt provided the assist.

Referees had their hands full with a major incident at 2:20 into the third period. Four fighting penalties were dished out along with two game misconducts.

Whitby kept Burlington's goalie busy throughout the game, and Andrew Lee made 32 saves on 36 shots.

Whitby also got points from Matt Fischer, who also racked up one goal and two assists to lead the team in points and Dimagno, who also finished with one goal and one assist. Nik Coric also scored for Whitby. In addition, Whitby received assists from Jonathan OHara, Stefan von Engelbrechten, Ryan Erickson, and Davis Kuksis, who each chipped in one.

The Cougars' defensemen played an important role in the offense, chipping in three goals.

Burlington also got a goal from Jordan Chard as well. Other players who recorded assists for Burlington were David Thomson, Ben Scheel, and Matt Holmes, who contributed one each.

Austin Cain recorded 25 saves for the Fury. Whitby totaled seven minutes in penalty time with one minor and one major and went 1-for-2 on the power play. The Fury ran into serious disciplinary problems during the contest, and Sarris was ejected from the game. Burlington totaled nine minutes in penalty time with two minors and one major and went 1-for-1 on the power play. For the Cougars, Dante Felicetti was ejected from the game.
