Cobourg uses big second period to beat North York, 7-0

The North York Rangers was within striking distance after one period, but the Cobourg Cougars put the pedal down in the second en route to a 7-0 victory.

North York's power play was ineffective against Cobourg's penalty kill, which allowed zero goals while shorthanded.

The Cougars were sparked by Josh Hopkin, who tallied one goal. Hopkin scored 15:00 into the first period to make the score 1-0 Cobourg. Jacob Friend provided the assist.

Cobourg forced the Rangers' netminders to work between the pipes, taking 43 shots and forcing 36 saves. Gianluca Baggetta made 29 stops and Evgueni Makarski made seven. The Cougars' penalty kill was spotless, allowing no goals on seven North York power plays. Cobourg's defensive effort looked to be improved. The Cougars allow 2.4 goals per game. Cobourg's goal total was higher than its season average. The Cougars have scored at the pace of 3.5 goals per game during the current campaign. The defensemen of Cobourg were also effective in North York's zone, and came away with three goals.

Cobourg also got points from Sam Dunn, who also racked up one goal and one assist and Riley Stillman, who also registered one goal and two assists to lead the team in points. Cobourg also had goals scored by Spencer Holt, Kenzie Smith, Connor Armour, and Austin Veleke, who each put in one. In addition, Cobourg received assists from Matt Watson, Ryan OGrady, Mitchell Gibson, Connor Hogg, Taylor Gauld, and Theo Lewis, who contributed one each.

The Rangers' offense operated below their season average. North York puts an average of 3.7 pucks into the net per game. The Rangers' penalty kill unit could not stop the Cougars' power play, which converted on three of five opportunities. North York could not stay out of the penalty box, as the team accrued 26 minutes in penalties during the game.

Stefano Durante made 24 saves for Cobourg on 24 shots. The Cougars incurred 38 minutes in penalty time with nine minors.
