Wellington holds on for 6-5 win against St. Michaels

The Wellington Dukes survived a determined comeback attempt by the St. Michaels Buzzers on the way to a 6-5 win.

Wellington took a 6-4 lead during the third period, only to have St. Michaels storm back on a Troy Oakley goal 14:25 into the third period to pull to one goal down.

With three goals and three assists between them, Joe McKeown and Abbott Girduckis teamed up to power the Dukes' offense. McKeown registered two goals and one assist and Girduckis also notched one goal and two assists.

Wellington forced Buzzers' netminders to work between the pipes, firing 52 shots and forcing 46 saves. Mark Manolescu made 13 stops and George Argiropoulos made 33. The Dukes outdid their season average for goals scored. Wellington has scored at the pace of 3.3 goals per game during the current campaign.

Wellington additionally got points from Will Cook, who also finished with one goal and one assist and Girduckis, who also grabbed one goal and two assists. Others who scored for Wellington included Marco Azzano and Griffin McCarty, who each put in one. In addition, Wellington received assists from Greg Smith, who had two and Jeff Christensen and Wes St Amand, who each chipped in one.

The Buzzers stifled the Dukes' power play, and did not give up a single goal while down a man. St. Michaels forced Wellington goalie Olivier Lafreniere to work between the pipes, taking 41 shots. The Buzzers bested their season scoring average. St. Michaels averages 2.9 goals per game. The Buzzers got an offensive boost from their blueliners, who contributed two goals during the game.

St. Michaels was helped by Ian Edmondson, who had two goals. Edmondson scored the first of his two goals on the power play at 18 seconds into the first period to make the score 1-0 St. Michaels. The Buzzers had gained a power play chance when Nicolais Gomerich was whistled for delay of game. Thomas Beretta picked up the assist. Edmondson's next tally on the power play made the score 4-3 St. Michaels with 12:10 left in the second period. A.J. Dorazio provided the assist. St. Michaels also got points from Noah Jordan, who also registered one goal and one assist, Bron Loiselle, who also racked up one goal and one assist, and Oakley, who also registered one goal and one assist. More assists for St. Michaels came via Ashur Elliot, who had two and Marco Ferraro and Scott Teskey, who contributed one each.

The Dukes' Lafreniere stopped 36 shots out of the 41 that he faced. Wellington incurred four minutes in penalty time with two minors. St. Michaels incurred eight minutes in penalty time with four minors. The Buzzers ran into serious disciplinary problems during the contest, and Alex Boudreau was ejected from the game.
