Newmarket rolls over Hamilton, 4-1

The Newmarket Hurricanes were firing on all cylinders against the Hamilton Red Wings, and when the final buzzer sounded Hurricanes emerged with a 4-1 win.

Newmarket was led by goalie Connor Ryckman, who finished with 28 saves while allowing one goal. Ryckman certainly lowered his goals against average, which was 2.95 entering the contest.

Sam Hu was all over the ice for the Hurricanes, as he tallied two goals in the win. Hu's tallies came at 6:36 into the first period to make the score 2-0 Newmarket and 19:14 into the third to make the score 4-1 Newmarket.

Newmarket forced Hamilton goalie Jordan Cartney to work between the pipes, taking 39 shots.

Others who scored for Newmarket included Mitchell Duggan and Christian Cella, who each put in one. Other players who recorded assists for Newmarket were Brett Thomson, who had one, Curtis Harvey, who had three, and Cameron Nicoll and Anthony Salemi, who contributed two each.

The Red Wings were often in penalty trouble, totaling six minors and one major for 27 minutes in penalty time. Hamilton had been averaging 14.0 minutes in penalties per game. The Red Wings excelled on the penalty kill, not giving up a single goal in seven chances. Hamilton was held below its usual level of production. The Red Wings put an average of 3.5 pucks into the net per game.

Hamilton was led by Nicholas Lepone, who scored the team's only goal. Lepone scored on the power play 16:17 into the second period to make the score 2-1 Newmarket. The Red Wings had gotten the advantage when the Hurricanes' Marty Lawlor was sent off for slashing. Josh LaFrance provided the assist.

Newmarket incurred 14 minutes in penalty time with seven minors. Jordan Cartney made 35 saves for Hamilton on 38 shots. The Red Wings registered one goal on eight power play opportunities. Team's Lucas Condotta and Joseph Mitchell were slapped with misconducts and ejected from the game.
