Cobourg holds on for 5-4 win against Newmarket

The Newmarket Hurricanes tried their best to erase a three-goal deficit, but the Cobourg Cougars would not be denied the victory and hung on to win, 5-4.

Cobourg made the score 4-1 on a goal by Dawson Theede at 5:05 in the second period, and Newmarket got as close as 4-3 when Ryan Young scored 1:24 into the third period.

The Cougars got the win behind a great game by Theede, who had two goals and one assist. Theede scored the first of his two goals at 17:57 into the first period to make the score 3-1 Cobourg. Rylee McKinnon provided the assist. Theede's next tally made the score 4-1 Cobourg with 14:55 left in the second period. Alex Riche assisted on the tally.

Cobourg forced the Hurricanes' goaltenders to work in net, getting 36 shots and forcing 31 saves. Tyler Richardson made 15 stops and Connor Ryckman made 16.

Others who scored for Cobourg included Mitchell Gibson, Spencer Holt, and Taylor Gauld, who each put in one. In addition, Cobourg received assists from Jake Baird, who had two and Ryan OGrady and Riley Stillman, who each chipped in one.

Newmarket kept the Cougars' goalie busy throughout the game, and Stefano Durante made 32 saves on 36 shots.

The Hurricanes were led by Joseph Mizzi, who had one goal and one assist. Mizzi scored 16:10 into the second period to make the score 4-2 Cobourg. Jonathan Colley provided the assist. Newmarket additionally got points from Colley, who also tallied one goal and one assist. Sam Hu also scored for Newmarket. More assists for Newmarket came via Ryan McReynolds, who had two and Nick Boddy and Brett Thomson, who contributed one each.

Cobourg incurred 12 minutes in penalty time with six minors. Newmarket incurred eight minutes in penalty time with four minors.
