David Thomson netted a hat trick to lead the Burlington Cougars over the Milton Icehawks, 7-4. Thomson's first goal came 13:42 into the first period. He then added goals at 9:13 into the second and at 12:44 into the second.Milton's eight penalties came back to haunt it, as the Icehawks let up four goals while on the penalty kill. Milton was unable to stop Burlington from sending pucks towards the net, and the Cougars eventually piled up 34 shots on goal. Burlington found the back of the net more times than it usually has this season. This season, the Cougars average 2.8 goals per contest. Burlington additionally got points from Matt Holmes, who also had one goal and one assist, Jack Jeffers, who also racked up one goal and one assist, and Daniel Volpe, who also registered one goal and two assists. Burlington also got a goal from Spencer Herbst as well. More assists for Burlington came via Willy Paul and Ben Scheel, who contributed one each and Nicholas Holt, Michael Alberga, and Jacob Ovens, who each chipped in two. The Icehawks kept Burlington's goalie busy throughout the game, and Cammeron Radford made 39 saves on 43 shots. Milton could not stay out of the penalty box, as the team accrued 16 minutes in penalties during the game. The Icehawks were led by Ryan Taylor, who finished with two goals. Taylor scored the first of his two goals on the power play at 7:56 into the first period to make the score 1-1. Milton had taken the advantage when the Cougars' Herbst got sent off for interference. Dawson Shackelton provided the assist. Taylor's next tally on the power play made the score 6-4 Burlington with 18:49 left in the third period. Sean Robertson picked up the assist. Others who scored for Milton included Daniel Hardie and Johnathon Schaefer, who scored one goal each. In addition, Milton received assists from Kevin Fitzpatrick, who had one. Burlington incurred eight minutes in penalty time with four minors. The Cougars ran into serious disciplinary problems during the contest, and Chris Cudek was ejected from the game. Scott Smith made 27 saves for the Icehawks on 34 shots. Milton registered one goal on four power play opportunities. |
