Richardson leads Newmarket to shutout victory over Burlington

Tyler Richardson made 28 saves to complete the shutout and led the Newmarket Hurricanes to a 6-0 win against the Burlington Cougars.

Newmarket got the win behind a great game by Ryan Shaw, who had two goals and two assists. Shaw scored the first of his two goals at 19:41 into the first period to make the score 2-0 Newmarket. Curtis Harvey picked up the assist. Shaw's next tally made the score 4-0 Newmarket with 9:08 left in the second period. The Hurricanes earned a power play opportunity when Willy Paul was put in the box for charging. Harvey assisted on the tally.

Newmarket's penalty box was a popular destination as the team totaled seven minors and one major for 19 minutes in penalty time. The Hurricanes surpassed its season average of 16.0 penalty minutes per game. Newmarket stifled Burlington's power play, and did not give up a single goal while down a man. The Hurricanes kept the Cougars' goalie busy throughout the game, and Joe Noonan made 37 saves on 43 shots. Newmarket outdid its season average for goals scored. The Hurricanes have scored at the pace of 3.5 goals per game during the current campaign.

Newmarket also got points from Cameron Nicoll, who also had one goal and one assist and Joseph Mizzi, who also racked up one goal and two assists. Newmarket also had goals scored by Jordan Oshowy and Nick Boddy, who each put in one. In addition, Newmarket received assists from Mackenzie OMahony, who had one and Taylor Joseph and Ryan Young, who contributed two each.

Burlington was often in penalty trouble, totaling 13 minors and one major for 81 minutes in penalty time. The Cougars had been averaging 22.0 minutes in penalties per game. Burlington could not produce up to its normal offensive output. The Cougars average 2.4 goals per game.

Newmarket registered four goals on 10 power play opportunities. For the Hurricanes, Matt Pyz was ejected from the game. Burlington registered zero goals on five power play opportunities. Team's David Kiss, Mike Choma, and Jack Jeffers were slapped with misconducts and ejected from the game.
