Whitby wins tough contest against Hamilton, 6-4

The Whitby Fury and the Hamilton Red Wings were evenly matched throughout their contest, but Whitby made the most of its opportunities and won, 6-4.

Neither team gained more than a two-goal lead, and Stefan von Engelbrechten's goal in the third period proved to be the difference maker.

Matt Fischer was all over the ice for the Fury, as he tallied two goals and one assist in the win. Fischer scored the first of his two goals on the power play at 53 seconds into the third period to make the score 3-2 Whitby. Fischer's next tally on the power play made the score 6-4 Whitby with four seconds left in the third period. Ryan Kirkup assisted on the tally.

Hamilton's power play was ineffective against Whitby's penalty kill, which allowed one goal while shorthanded.

The Fury kept the Red Wings' goalie busy throughout the game, and Alexander Bishop made 39 saves on 45 shots.

Whitby additionally got points from Kirkup, who also had one goal and one assist. Others who scored for Whitby included Jesse Dunn and Dakota Kettrick, who scored one goal each. More assists for Whitby came via Austin Fischer, Mitchell Burghardt, Jonathan OHara, Scott Kirton, Jeremy Wu, and Davis Kuksis, who contributed one each.

Hamilton forced Whitby goalie Tyler Feaver to work between the pipes, taking 35 shots.

The Red Wings were helped by Ryan Erickson, who grabbed one goal and two assists. Erickson scored 15:45 into the third period to make the score 5-4 Whitby. Carl Greco picked up the assist. Hamilton also got points from Matt Smith, who also registered one goal and one assist and Greco, who also tallied one goal and two assists. Luke Sinclair also scored for Hamilton. In addition, Hamilton received assists from Otis Goldman and Jeff Joynt, who each chipped in one.

Feaver rejected 31 shots on goal for the Fury. Whitby incurred 12 minutes in penalty time with six minors. Hamilton incurred 12 minutes in penalty time with six minors.
