Whitby holds on for 5-3 win against Wellington

The Wellington Dukes tried to dig themselves out of a three-goal hole, but the Whitby Fury held on for a 5-3 victory.

Whitby made the score 5-2 on a goal by Mitch Emerson at 11:47 in the third period, and Wellington got as close as 5-3 when Nick Devito scored 13:36 into the third period.

The Fury pulled out the victory even though they were hit with 18 penalty minutes.

Whitby forced the Dukes goalie Taylor Welsh to work between the pipes, taking 44 shots.

The Fury were helped by Matt Fischer, who registered one goal and one assist. Fischer scored 8:57 into the third period to make the score 4-2 Whitby. Stefan von Engelbrechten assisted on the tally. Whitby also got points from Ryan Kirkup, who also had one goal and two assists, Henry Thompson, who also finished with one goal and two assists, von Engelbrechten, who also racked up one goal and one assist, and Emerson, who also tallied one goal and one assist. In addition, Whitby received assists from Scott Kirton and Davis Kuksis, who each chipped in one.

Wellington's defense let in more goals than it usually has this year. The Dukes give up 2.5 goals per game.

Others who scored for Wellington included Jacob Hetherington and Brandon Kosik, who each put in one. More assists for Wellington came via Joe McKeown, who had one and Abbott Girduckis, who had two.

Tyler Feaver rejected 27 shots on goal for Whitby. The Fury registered two goals on five power play opportunities. Wellington's Welsh stopped 39 shots out of the 44 that he faced. The Dukes incurred 12 minutes in penalty time with six minors.
