Cobourg squeaks by Whitby, 3-2Cobourg Community Centre Mon, Oct 13, 2014 Story by Narrative Science.
In a game where neither team could get a cushion, the Cobourg Cougars escaped with a 3-2 victory over the Whitby Fury. Neither team gained more than a one-goal lead, and Theo Lewis's goal in the third period proved to be the difference maker. Cobourg's penalty kill excelled, as the Cougars gave up one goal despite allowing seven power plays. Cobourg was sparked by Lewis, who had one goal. Lewis scored short handed 16:27 into the third period to make the score 3-2 Cobourg. The Cougars found themselves down a man on Rylee McKinnon's slashing. Cobourg also got points from Liam Grande, who also racked up one goal and one assist to lead the team in points. Ryan Taylor also scored for Cobourg. More assists for Cobourg came via Connor Armour, who had one. Whitby managed to stay out of the box better than usual, registering one minor for two minutes in penalty time. The Fury wound up below its season average of 16.0 penalty minutes per game. Whitby did not reach the goal total it has come to expect this season. The Fury average 4.3 goals per game. Cobourg was unable to stop Whitby from sending pucks towards the net, and the Fury eventually piled up 31 shots on goal. Whitby was helped by Davis Kuksis, who registered one goal. Kuksis scored 12:31 into the first period to make the score 1-1. Whitby also got a goal from Henry Thompson as well. Other players who recorded assists for Whitby were Jonathan OHara and Jeremy Wu, who each chipped in one. The Cougars' Austin Washkurak stopped 29 shots out of the 31 that he faced. Cobourg incurred 14 minutes in penalty time with seven minors. Tyler Feaver rejected 24 shots on goal for the Fury.
