Cobourg uses early goal to top Wellington, 1-0

The Cobourg Cougars beat the Wellington Dukes, 1-0, in a contest where the winning goal was scored in the first period but the game remained close throughout.

Mitchell Gibson provided Cobourg with the game-winning tally when he scored 5:41 into the first period. Theo Lewis provided the assist.

Stefano Durante frustrated Wellington's offense all game, and stopped 30 shots en route to a shutout. The solid play of Durante will be reflected in his goals against average, which pre-game was 1.2.

The Cougars were paced by Gibson, who finished with one goal.

Cobourg put up an impenetrable defensive front on the penalty kill, and did not allow the Dukes to score on any of their five power plays. The Cougars were held below their usual level of production. Cobourg puts an average of 3.5 pucks into the net per game. The Cougars' offense rang up 40 shots on Wellington's net.

Other players who recorded assists for Cobourg were Ryan OGrady, who had one.

The Dukes managed to stay out of the box better than usual, racking up one minor for two minutes in penalty time. Wellington finished below its season average of 12.0 penalty minutes per game. The Dukes excelled on the penalty kill, not giving up a single goal in three chances. Wellington could not produce up to its normal offensive output. The Dukes average 3.5 goals per game.

Cobourg incurred eight minutes in penalty time with four minors. For the Cougars, Jared Marino was ejected from the game. Wellington's Taylor Welsh stopped 39 shots out of the 40 that he faced.
