Burlington falls apart in second, loses to Whitby, 6-0Sixteen Mile Sports Complex Sat, Sep 27, 2014 Story by Narrative Science.
The Burlington Cougars was within striking distance after one period, but the Whitby Fury put the pedal down in the second en route to a 6-0 victory. Matt Fischer had two goals and two assists to lead Whitby. Fischer scored the first of his two goals at 10:36 into the first period to make the score 1-0 Whitby. Mitch Emerson provided the assist. Fischer's next tally made the score 4-0 Whitby with 5:23 left in the second period. Patrick McAuliffe picked up the assist. The Fury put up an impenetrable defensive front on the penalty kill, and did not allow Burlington to score on any of its five power plays. Whitby's defensive play was more effective than usual against the Cougars. The Fury allow 2.9 goals per game. Burlington was unable to stop Whitby from sending pucks towards the net, and the Fury eventually piled up 46 shots on goal. The defensemen of Whitby were also effective in the Cougars' zone, and came away with three goals. Whitby additionally got points from McAuliffe, who also registered two goals and one assist. Whitby also had goals scored by Scott Kirton and Daniel Barnes, who scored one goal each. Other players who recorded assists for Whitby were Zack Elson and Ryan Kirkup, who contributed one each and Jonathan OHara, Jeremy Wu, and Davis Kuksis, who each chipped in two. Burlington's offense operated below its season average. The Cougars put an average of 2.5 pucks into the net per game. The Fury's defense shut down Burlington's forwards for much of the game, and the Cougars got off only 13 shots during the contest. Burlington found itself short handed often, totaling 28 penalty minutes and allowing nine power plays. Tyler Feaver rejected 13 shots on goal for Whitby. The Fury ended with 15 minutes in penalty time with five minors and one major. For Whitby, Mitchell Burghardt and Emerson were ejected from the contest. Evgueni Makarski recorded 40 saves for the Cougars. Burlington ran into serious disciplinary problems during the contest, and Matt Holmes was ejected from the game.
