Pickering uses big second period to beat Mississauga, 8-1

The Mississauga Chargers was within striking distance after one period, but the Pickering Panthers put the pedal down in the second en route to an 8-1 victory.

Pickering got the win behind a great game by BJ Salerno, who had two goals and two assists. Salerno scored the first of his two goals at 8:32 into the first period to make the score 1-1. Joseph Mitchell provided the assist. Salerno's next tally made the score 3-1 Pickering with 12:37 left in the second period. Nicholas Lepone assisted on the tally.

The Panthers were led by goalie Jordan Cartney, who finished with 28 saves while allowing one goal. The solid play of Cartney will be reflected in his goals against average, which pre-game was 3.4.

Pickering forced Mississauga's goaltenders to work in net, firing 43 shots and forcing 35 saves. Alex Lepore made 13 stops and Mitchell Heck made 22. The Panthers' penalty kill was spotless, allowing no goals on four Mississauga power plays. Pickering outdid its season average for goals scored. This season, the Panthers average 4.3 goals per contest.

Pickering additionally got points from Kevin Dimagno, who also grabbed two goals and two assists. Others who scored for Pickering included Cam Palmer, who had two and Dalton Lawrence and Matteo Condotta, who each put in one. In addition, Pickering received assists from Brian Hurley and Mark Tenuta, who contributed one each and Lucas Condotta and Blake Coffey, who each chipped in two.

The Chargers did not reach the goal total they have come to expect this season. Mississauga averages 3.5 goals per game. The Chargers' penalty kill was ineffective, and let in three goals to Pickering's power play unit.

Mississauga was led by Joseph Molinaro, who scored the team's only goal. Molinaro scored 1:36 into the first period to make the score 1-0 Mississauga. Thomas Lattavo picked up the assist.

The Panthers incurred 28 minutes in penalty time with four minors. For Pickering, Lawrence was ejected from the game. The Chargers incurred 50 minutes in penalty time with five minors.
