Hughes nets hat trick, leads Oakville to 15-1 win over Burlington

Brandon Hughes lifted the Oakville Blades to a 15-1 victory with a hat trick against the Burlington Cougars.

Hughes notched his first tally 6:45 into the first period. He then added goals at 3:42 into the third and at 19:08 into the third.

Oakville gained an early advantage, leading 5-1 by the end of the first period.

Burlington was stymied by the Blades' netminder Daniel Mannella, who stopped 31 shots during the victory. Mannella managed to improve on his goals against average, which stood at 2.24 prior to the game.

Oakville forced Cougars' goalies to work between the pipes, racking up 44 shots and forcing 29 saves. Evgueni Makarski made five stops and Cammeron Radford made 24. The Blades found the back of the net more times than it usually has this season. Oakville averages 3.9 goals per game.

Oakville also got points from Kamil Tkaczuk, who also registered two goals and three assists and Max Lindsay, who also finished with one goal and one assist. Oakville also got a goal from Josh Kosack as well. In addition, Oakville received assists from Tanner Shaw, who had four, Daniel Jelic, Paul Butler, Jackson Bales, and Ryan Garvey, who contributed one each, and Ryan Markovic, Greg Campbell, Tyler Burns, and Matt Lippa, who each chipped in three.

The Cougars' offense rang up 32 shots on the Blades' net. Burlington's penalty killing units received substantial work throughout the game as the Cougars finished with 16 penalty minutes.

Oakville incurred 10 minutes in penalty time with five minors. Burlington registered one goal on seven power play opportunities. For the Cougars, Ben Morris was ejected from the game.
