Stouffville squeaks by Newmarket, 5-3

The Stouffville Spirit and the Newmarket Hurricanes were evenly matched throughout their contest, but Stouffville made the most of its opportunities and won, 5-3.

Neither team gained more than a two-goal lead, and Joseph Deveny's goal in the third period proved to be the difference maker.

The Spirit were paced by Deveny, who racked up one goal and one assist. Deveny scored 8:18 into the third period to make the score 4-3 Stouffville. Kyler Challis provided the assist.

Stouffville's offense rang up 41 shots on Newmarket's net.

Stouffville additionally got points from Nick Thomakos, who also had one goal and one assist. Stouffville also had goals scored by Spencer Roberts, Tyson Bruce, and Alex Gilmour, who scored one goal each. In addition, Stouffville received assists from Chad Burrows, who had two and Matthew Heffernan, Matthew Dunlop, and Adam Burnett, who contributed one each.

The Hurricanes were helped by Jesse Wiemer, who registered one goal. Wiemer scored on the power play 14:43 into the second period to make the score 2-2. A high sticking penalty on Gilmour had put Newmarket on the power play. Anthony Salemi picked up the assist. Others who scored for Newmarket included Curtis Harvey and Ryan Shaw, who each put in one. More assists for Newmarket came via Christian Dedonato, Jonathan Colley, and Ryan Young, who each chipped in one.

Aaron Taylor rejected 25 shots on goal for the Spirit. Stouffville incurred 14 minutes in penalty time with seven minors. Connor Ryckman recorded 36 saves for the Hurricanes. Newmarket incurred 18 minutes in penalty time with four minors.
