Burlington erases deficit to stun Oakville, 7-6

The Burlington Cougars climbed out of a four-goal hole to beat the Oakville Blades, 7-6.

Burlington let multiple leads slip away before eventually digging out of a four hole to pick up the win. The Cougars took a 1-0 advantage on a goal by Kyle West at 1:09 in the first period. Burlington found itself down 5-1 after Oakville's Joseph Mitchell put the puck home at 19:17 in the second period. After tying things up at 6-6 on a goal by Steve Mariani at 18:52 in the third, the Cougars got the game-winner from Spencer Herbst at 19:48 in the third period.

Burlington got the win thanks to a great game by West, who had two goals and one assist.

The Cougars' goal total was higher than their season average. Burlington averages 2.8 goals per game. The Cougars could not stay out of the penalty box, as the team accrued 16 minutes in penalties during the game. Burlington got an offensive boost from its blueliners, who contributed two goals during the game.

Burlington also got points from Mariani, who also finished with one goal and two assists and Wyatt Trainer, who also registered one goal and one assist. Others who scored for Burlington included Ben Morris and Nathan Fiorino, who each put in one. In addition, Burlington received assists from David Thomson, who had two and Louis Vlahakis and Ben Scheel, who contributed one each.

The Blades kept the Cougars' goalie busy throughout the game, and Evgueni Makarski made 37 saves on 43 shots. Oakville surpassed its usual scoring output this season. The Blades have scored at the pace of 3.7 goals per game during the current campaign. Oakville's defense let in more goals than it usually has this year. The Blades are averaging 2.4 goals against for the season.

Oakville was helped by Matt Lippa, who tallied one goal and one assist. Lippa scored on the power play 12:50 into the second period to make the score 3-1 Oakville. A hooking penalty on Mike Choma had put the Blades on the power play. Mitchell provided the assist. Oakville additionally got points from Mitchell, who also had one goal and one assist, Ryan Burns, who also grabbed one goal and one assist, and Christian Rajic, who also finished with one goal and one assist. Oakville also had goals scored by Ryan Markovic and Brandon Hughes, who scored one goal each. More assists for Oakville came via Greg Campbell, who had two and Brian Hurley, Sean Kohler, and Josh Kosack, who each chipped in one.

Burlington registered one goal on seven power play opportunities. For the Cougars, Sean McLaren was ejected from the game. Oakville's Brendan McGlynn stopped 19 shots out of the 25 that he faced. The Blades totaled 25 minutes in penalty time with five minors and one major and went 1-for-6 on the power play. Oakville ran into serious disciplinary problems during the contest, and Jackson Bales was ejected from the game.
