Appleby College survives St. Andrews College comeback, wins 5-4

The St. Andrews College Saints tried their best to erase a two-goal deficit, but the Appleby College Blue Dogs would not be denied the victory and hung on to win, 5-4.

A goal by Jonathan Giordano put Appleby College up 5-3 in the third period, but St. Andrews College pulled to within one on JD Falconer's tally 17:50 into the third period.

The Blue Dogs got the win with help from a great game by Tommy Hoogaars, who had one goal and two assists. Hoogaars scored 5:14 into the second period to make the score 3-3. Ryan McGregor picked up the assist.

Appleby College's penalty kill was spotless, allowing no goals on four St. Andrews College power plays. The Blue Dogs' goal total was higher than their season average. Appleby College averages 2.7 goals per game. The Blue Dogs did not challenge the opposing netminder, only getting 12 shots on net to force seven saves. The defensemen of Appleby College were also effective in the Saints' zone, and came away with two goals.

Appleby College also got points from McGregor, who also finished with one goal and one assist. Appleby College also had goals scored by Adam Scholz and Bailey Newton, who scored one goal each. In addition, Appleby College received assists from Matt Thompson and Callum Jones, who contributed one each.

St. Andrews College managed to stay out of the box better than usual, registering one minor for two minutes in penalty time. The Saints wound up below its season average of 12.0 penalty minutes per game. St. Andrews College forced the Blue Dogs goalie Avery Gobbo to work between the pipes, taking 35 shots. The Saints' normally stingy defense allowed more goals than usual. St. Andrews College gives up 1.5 goal per game.

The Saints were helped by Alex MacDonald, who tallied one goal. MacDonald scored 7:45 into the first period to make the score 2-0 St. Andrews College. Calvin Walker provided the assist. Others who scored for St. Andrews College included Matthew Thom and Justin Fregona, who each put in one. More assists for St. Andrews College came via Griffin James, who had two and Quentin Campbell and Jacob Miller, who each chipped in one.

Gobbo rejected 31 shots on goal for Appleby College. The Blue Dogs incurred eight minutes in penalty time with four minors. Cole Chapman took the loss and made two saves before being replaced by Matthew Galajda who made five saves.
