Wingham falls to Walkerton in overtime, 5-4 (OT)

Lauchlin Elder gave the Walkerton Hawks a 5-4 (OT) victory over the Wingham Ironmen when he scored 4:41 into the extra period.

After the loss made the series score 3-2 in the best of seven series, Wingham faces elimination next time out.

Walkerton came back from a two-goal deficit to capture the victory. The Hawks was down 2-0 after a goal by the Ironmen's Jamie Huber at 14:07 in the first period. Walkerton knotted things up at 4-4 on a goal by Jordie Schneider at 17:02 in the second period.

Elder had a great game for the Hawks, netting two goals.

Walkerton's penalty kill was spotless, allowing no goals on six Wingham power plays. The Hawks' offense rang up 41 shots on Wingham's net.

Walkerton also got points from Ryan Hamelin, who also finished with one goal and one assist. Walkerton also had goals scored by Chris Gillman and Brandon Lamothe, who scored one goal each. Other players who recorded assists for Walkerton were Drew Davidson, who had three and Jay Thomson, David Gallo, Calvin Penney, and Brett Coulson, who contributed one each.

The Ironmen forced Walkerton goalie Trevor Fleming to work between the pipes, taking 37 shots.

Wingham was led by Alex Kuntz, who racked up two goals. Kuntz scored the first of his two goals at 1:50 into the first period to make the score 1-0 Wingham. Kuntz's next tally made the score 3-2 Wingham with 10:04 left in the second period. Darren Kerr provided the assist. Wingham additionally got points from Schneider, who also had one goal and one assist. In addition, Wingham received assists from Brett Brophy and Ryan McNeil, who each chipped in one.

Trevor Fleming made 33 saves for the Hawks on 37 shots. Walkerton incurred 20 minutes in penalty time with five minors. The Hawks ran into serious disciplinary problems during the contest, and Jordan Turcotte was ejected from the game. Ben Nelson recorded 36 saves for the Ironmen. Wingham incurred 10 minutes in penalty time with five minors.
