Welland stifles Niagara Falls' comeback, gains 4-2 victory

The Welland Jr. Canadians, who led by three goals at one point, survived a comeback attempt by the Niagara Falls Canucks and clinched a 4-2 victory.

Welland led by three goals at one point and ended with the victory. The largest advantage in the game came when the Jr. Canadians' Jimmy Sheehan's scored at 17:59 in the first period to put Welland up 3-0.

The win by the Jr. Canadians broke a deadlock and gave Welland a 2-1 advantage in the best of seven series.

Niagara Falls' power play was ineffective against the Jr. Canadians' penalty kill, which allowed zero goals while shorthanded.

Welland put up an impenetrable defensive front on the penalty kill, and did not allow the Canucks to score on any of their six power plays. The Jr. Canadians' offense rang up 36 shots on Niagara Falls' net. The defensemen of Welland were also effective in the Canucks' zone, and came away with two goals.

The Jr. Canadians were helped by Gabe Ruggi, who registered one goal and one assist. Ruggi scored on the power play 16:52 into the second period to make the score 4-2 Welland. Welland had gotten the advantage when Niagara Falls' Cole Langan was sent off for high sticking. Adam Mataya provided the assist. Welland also got points from Mataya, who also finished with one goal and one assist and Jack Fitzgerald, who also racked up one goal and one assist. Other players who recorded assists for Welland were Max Cipriano, Bryan Komasara, and Matthew Mateljan, who contributed one a piece.

The Canucks kept the Jr. Canadians' goalie busy throughout the game, and Jeffrey Heartwell made 29 saves on 31 shots.

Niagara Falls was helped by Vittorio Giannico, who tallied one goal. Giannico scored 18:39 into the first period to make the score 3-1 Welland. Johnny Curran also scored for Niagara Falls. In addition, Niagara Falls received assists from Garrett Gallardi, who had one.

Welland incurred 16 minutes in penalty time with eight minors. Emerson Verrier made 32 saves for the Canucks on 36 shots. Niagara Falls ended with 29 minutes in penalty time with seven minors and one major. The Canucks ran into serious disciplinary problems during the contest, and Cole Vinnai was ejected from the game.
