Soo Firehawks outlasts Detroit Fighting Irish, 4-3

Soo Firehawks gutted out a close 4-3 win against Detroit Fighting Irish.

Soo Firehawks gained the winning advantage on a goal by Steven Smoltz 15:55 into the third period and hung on until final buzzer.

The win by Soo Firehawks clinched the best of three series at 2-1.

Smoltz had two goals to lead Soo Firehawks to victory.

Soo Firehawks forced Detroit Fighting Irish goalie John Slavik to work between the pipes, taking 41 shots. Soo Firehawks was held back by its power play unit, which tallied one goal on nine chances. Team's forwards weren't the only contributers offensively, and the team's defensemen showcased their scoring touch with two goals.

Soo Firehawks additionally got points from Nicholas Murphy, who also racked up one goal and three assists to lead the team in points. Soo Firehawks also got a goal from Justin Garton as well. In addition, Soo Firehawks received assists from Connor McNary, Cody Anderson, Tyler Jones, and Anthony Laaksonen, who contributed one each.

Soo Firehawks was unable to stop Detroit Fighting Irish from sending pucks towards the net, and Detroit Fighting Irish eventually piled up 48 shots on goal.

Detroit Fighting Irish was helped by James Smith, who had two goals. Smith scored the first of his two goals on the power play at 17:20 into the first period to make the score 1-1. Detroit Fighting Irish had gained a power play chance when Smoltz was whistled for interference. Anthony Wojciechowski provided the assist. Smith's next tally on the power play made the score 2-2 with 15:03 left in the third period. Detroit Fighting Irish had gotten the advantage when Soo Firehawks' Nate Fitzpatrick was sent off for slashing. Wojciechowski picked up the assist. Detroit Fighting Irish also got points from Wojciechowski, who also registered one goal and two assists to lead the team in points. Other players who recorded assists for Detroit Fighting Irish were Robert Speer and James Stacey, who each chipped in one.

Anthony Benvenuti rejected 45 shots on goal for Soo Firehawks. Soo Firehawks incurred 28 minutes in penalty time with nine minors. Detroit Fighting Irish's Slavik stopped 37 shots out of the 41 that he faced. Detroit Fighting Irish totaled 25 minutes in penalty time with 10 minors and one major and went 2-for-5 on the power play.
