Soo Firehawks outlasts Detroit Fighting Irish, 3-2

In a game where neither team could get a cushion, Soo Firehawks escaped with a 3-2 victory over Detroit Fighting Irish.

Neither team gained more than a one-goal lead, and Tyler Jones's goal in the third period proved to be the difference maker.

Soo Firehawks evened the best of three series at 1-1 and forced a deciding game three.

Jones had two goals and one assist to lead Soo Firehawks. Jones scored the first of his two goals on the power play at 8:07 into the first period to make the score 2-1 Soo Firehawks. Soo Firehawks earned a power play opportunity when Gilbert Guerrero was put in the box for hooking. Nicholas Murphy picked up the assist. Jones' next tally on the power play made the score 3-2 Soo Firehawks with 13:02 left in the third period. Murphy provided the assist.

Soo Firehawks put up an impenetrable defensive front on the penalty kill, and did not allow Detroit Fighting Irish to score on any of its four power plays. Detroit Fighting Irish was unable to stop Soo Firehawks from sending pucks towards the net, and Soo Firehawks eventually piled up 37 shots on goal.

Soo Firehawks also got a goal from Kevin Killips as well. More assists for Soo Firehawks came via Matthew MacLaren and Steven Smoltz, who contributed one each.

Detroit Fighting Irish forced Soo Firehawks goalie Anthony Benvenuti to work between the pipes, taking 56 shots.

Detroit Fighting Irish was led by Jacob Hernandez, who had two goals. Hernandez scored the first of his two goals at 6:00 into the first period to make the score 1-1. Anthony Wojciechowski assisted on the tally. Hernandez's next tally made the score 2-2 with 24 seconds left in the second period. Aaron Robinson picked up the assist. Other players who recorded assists for Detroit Fighting Irish were Ryan Brown, who had one.

Soo Firehawks' Benvenuti stopped 54 shots out of the 56 that he faced. Soo Firehawks totaled 23 minutes in penalty time with four minors and one major and went 2-for-5 on the power play. For Soo Firehawks, Killips was ejected from the game. Christopher Lewis made 34 saves for Detroit Fighting Irish on 37 shots. Detroit Fighting Irish incurred 32 minutes in penalty time with six minors. Detroit Fighting Irish ran into serious disciplinary problems during the contest, and Guerrero was ejected from the game.
