Waterloo squeaks by Listowel, 5-3

The Waterloo Siskins gutted out a close 5-3 win against the Listowel Cyclones.

Waterloo gained the winning advantage on a goal by Troy Lajeunesse 28 seconds into the second period and hung on until final buzzer.

The Siskins were led by Brett Dykstra, who had one goal and one assist. Dykstra scored 8:04 into the second period to make the score 4-2 Waterloo. Matt Schieck picked up the assist.

In a losing effort, Listowel was led by Ted Nichol, who racked up two goals. Nichol scored the first of his two goals at 12:53 into the first period to make the score 1-1. Kenny Huether provided the assist. Nichol's next tally made the score 4-3 Waterloo with 5:31 left in the second period. Huether assisted on the tally.

Waterloo stifled the Cyclones' power play, and did not give up a single goal while down a man.

Waterloo additionally got points from Evan Kearns, who also tallied one goal and one assist. Others who scored for Waterloo included Christian Mroczkowski and Luke Gazzola, who each put in one. In addition, Waterloo received assists from Ryan Hergott, Evan Buehler, Jarrett Parker, Connor Bodnar, Joshua Defarias, and Danny Hanlon, who each chipped in one.

Listowel managed to stay out of the box better than usual, finishing with one minor for two minutes in penalty time. The Cyclones wound up below its season average of 20.0 penalty minutes per game.

Listowel also got points from Kevin Gergley, who also registered one goal and one assist to lead the team in points. More assists for Listowel came via Tanner Mighton, who had one and Blake Nichol, who had two.

Hergott rejected 21 shots on goal for the Siskins. Waterloo incurred six minutes in penalty time with three minors. Daniel Dekoning recorded 21 saves for Listowel. The Cyclones registered zero goals on three power play opportunities.
