Soo Firehawks uses shootout to best Detroit Fighting Irish, 2-1 (2-0 SO)

Three periods of regulation and an overtime session were not enough to settle matters as Soo Firehawks defeated Detroit Fighting Irish in a shootout 2-1 (2-0 SO).

The shootout featured seven attempts between both teams. Soo Firehawks also got a shootout goal from Nicholas Murphy.

Detroit Fighting Irish was stymied by Soo Firehawks netminder Brandon Hansen, who stopped 54 shots during the victory. Hansen certainly lowered his goals against average, which was 3.69 entering the contest.

Soo Firehawks' penalty kill was spotless, allowing no goals on five Detroit Fighting Irish power plays. Soo Firehawks' offense operated below it season average. Soo Firehawks puts an average of 5.5 pucks into the net per game. Soo Firehawks' offense rang up 40 shots on Detroit Fighting Irish's net.

Soo Firehawks was led by Calder Ashton, who had one goal. Ashton scored short handed 8:28 into the second period to make the score 1-0 Soo Firehawks. A boarding call on Nick Papandrea put Soo Firehawks on the penalty kill. Cody Anderson assisted on the tally.

Detroit Fighting Irish was led by Ryan Santo, who scored the team's only goal. Santo scored 19:27 into the second period to make the score 1-1. Anthony Wojciechowski picked up the assist.
