Smith's big game bests Soo Firehawks in 5-3 Detroit Fighting Irish win

James Smith had two goals and two assists to lead Detroit Fighting Irish to a 5-3 victory over Soo Firehawks.

Smith scored at 18:58 into the second period to make the score 3-2 Detroit Fighting Irish and again while 11:17 into the third to make the score 4-3 Detroit Fighting Irish.

Detroit Fighting Irish pulled out the victory even though it was hit with 16 penalty minutes.

Detroit Fighting Irish's penalty kill was spotless, allowing no goals on seven Soo Firehawks power plays. Detroit Fighting Irish forced Soo Firehawks goalie Brandon Hansen to work between the pipes, taking 42 shots.

Detroit Fighting Irish also got points from Ryan Santo, who also racked up two goals and two assists. Christian Ramage also scored for Detroit Fighting Irish. Other players who recorded assists for Detroit Fighting Irish were Robert Speer, who had two and Kyle Cobb, Ryan Morse, Michael Cruse, and Chadwick Cobb, who contributed one a piece.

Soo Firehawks stifled Detroit Fighting Irish's power play, and did not give up a single goal while down a man. Soo Firehawks did not reach the goal total it has come to expect this season. Soo Firehawks averages 7.2 goals per game. Detroit Fighting Irish was unable to stop Soo Firehawks from sending pucks towards the net, and Soo Firehawks eventually piled up 35 shots on goal.

Soo Firehawks was led by Nicholas Murphy, who had two goals. Murphy scored the first of his two goals at 9:15 into the second period to make the score 1-1. Ryan Marshall assisted on the tally. Murphy's next tally made the score 2-2 with 3:38 left in the second period. Kevin Killips provided the assist. Soo Firehawks also got a goal from Matthew MacLaren as well. In addition, Soo Firehawks received assists from Matthew Majic, Andrew Holder, and Calder Ashton, who each chipped in one.

Christopher Lewis made 32 saves for Detroit Fighting Irish on 35 shots. Detroit Fighting Irish registered zero goals on six power play opportunities. Hansen rejected 37 shots on goal for Soo Firehawks. Soo Firehawks incurred 14 minutes in penalty time with seven minors.
