Columbus vanquishes Mississippi Surge in shootout, 3-2 (2-0 SO)

Andy Willigar scored the clinching goal in a shootout, and the Columbus Cottonmouths picked up the extra point in a 3-2 (2-0 SO) win over Mississippi Surge.

The shootout lasted for eight attempts between the teams. In addition to the clincher, Columbus got a shootout goal from Willigar.

The Cottonmouths overcame a two-goal deficit to capture the victory. Columbus trailed 2-0 after a goal by Mississippi Surge's Evan Zych at 19:41 in the second period. The Cottonmouths tied things up at 2-2 on a goal by Matt Gingera at 14:03 in the third period.

Columbus put up an impenetrable defensive front on the penalty kill, and did not allow Mississippi Surge to score on any of its three power plays.

Columbus also got a goal from Jason Gray as well. More assists for Columbus came via Andre Herman and Dan Bremner, who contributed one each.

Mississippi Surge's penalty kill was spotless, allowing no goals on five Columbus power plays. Mississippi Surge's defensemen also contributed in the offensive zone and ended up with 16 shots between them. Mississippi Surge put 34 shots on net during the contest, more than the 16.3 it averages per game.

Mississippi Surge was helped by Trever Hertz, who registered one goal. Hertz scored 4:18 into the second period to make the score 1-0 Mississippi Surge. Kyle Kudroch assisted on the tally. Other players who recorded assists for Mississippi Surge were Nicholas Kuqali and Brett Vandehogen, who each chipped in one.

The Cottonmouths' Andrew Loewen stopped 32 shots out of the 34 that he faced. Columbus incurred six minutes in penalty time with three minors. Mathieu Dugas rejected 22 shots on goal for Mississippi Surge. Mississippi Surge incurred 10 minutes in penalty time with five minors.
