Banfield lifts Pensacola over Louisiana, 5-2

Corey Banfield had two goals to lead the Pensacola Ice Flyers to a 5-2 victory over the Louisiana IceGators.

Banfield found the back of the net 7:07 into the first period to make the score 1-0 Pensacola and again while on the power play 7:50 into the second to make the score 3-0 Pensacola.

Louisiana's power play was ineffective against Pensacola's penalty kill, which allowed zero goals while shorthanded.

The Ice Flyers racked up the penalties in the contest, and ended with eight minors and one major for 21 minutes in penalty time. Pensacola had been averaging 19.0 minutes in penalties per game. The Ice Flyers' penalty kill was spotless, allowing no goals on seven Louisiana power plays. Pensacola failed to reach its usual level of shot production, putting 21 pucks on goal after averaging 27.8 shots per game this season.

Pensacola also got points from Brett Lutes, who also registered one goal and one assist and Mitchell Good, who also racked up one goal and one assist. Pensacola also got a goal from Adam Pawlick as well. More assists for Pensacola came via Keegan Flaherty, Joe Caveney, Ryan Salvis, and John Dunbar, who each chipped in one and Tyler Amburgey and Joshua Turnbull, who contributed two each.

The 29 shots that the IceGators put on net surpassed Louisiana's average of 24.4 shots per game this season.

The IceGators were helped by Matt Robertson, who registered one goal. Robertson scored 1:06 into the third period to make the score 3-1 Pensacola. Shawn McNeil assisted on the tally. Adam Stuart also scored for Louisiana. In addition, Louisiana received assists from Jeff Grant, who had one.

Ross MacKinnon made 27 saves for the Ice Flyers on 29 shots. Pensacola registered two goals on five power play opportunities. Matt Zenzola rejected 16 shots on goal for Louisiana. The IceGators ended with 17 minutes in penalty time with six minors and one major.
