xLouisiana uses shootout to best Peoria, 6-5 (2-1 SO)

Jeremy Boyer scored the clinching goal in a shootout, and the xLouisiana IceGators picked up the extra point in a 6-5 (2-1 SO) win over the Peoria Rivermen.

The two teams needed 10 turns to complete the shootout. Peoria's shootout goal was scored by Garrett Vermeersch. xLouisiana also got a shootout goal from Chris Wilson.

The IceGators came back from a three-goal deficit to capture the victory. xLouisiana trailed 5-2 after a goal by the Rivermen's Matt Viola at 18:28 in the second period. The IceGators knotted things up at 5-5 on a goal by Shawn McNeil at 19:28 in the third period.

Ron Cramer and McNeil provided the spark for xLouisiana, combining for two goals and three assists. Cramer tallied two goals and McNeil also added zero goals and three assists.

The IceGators' offense rang up 31 shots on Peoria's net. xLouisiana bested its season scoring average. This season, the IceGators average 3.5 goals per contest.

xLouisiana also got points from McNeil, who also had one goal and three assists to lead the team in points. Others who scored for xLouisiana included Jeff Grant, Aaron McGill, and Adam Stuart, who scored one goal each. In addition, xLouisiana received assists from Kirk Byczynski, who had two and Clark Byczynski, Bret Peppler, and Wilson, who contributed one a piece.

With 30 shots on target during the contest, the Rivermen exceeded the 21.6 shots they average per game this year. Peoria surpassed its usual scoring output this season. The Rivermen average 2.7 goals per game.

Peoria was helped by Dean Yakura, who finished with two goals. Yakura scored the first of his two goals at 7:01 into the first period to make the score 1-0 Peoria. Locke Jillson picked up the assist. Yakura's next tally made the score 4-2 Peoria with 12:51 left in the second period. The Rivermen earned a power play opportunity when Jordan Braid was put in the box for tripping. Steve Morra assisted on the tally. Peoria additionally got points from Jillson, who also racked up one goal and one assist. Other players who recorded assists for Peoria were Taylor Larsen, who had one and Cole Ruwe, Parker Stanfield, and Vermeersch, who contributed two a piece.

xLouisiana's starting goalie, Kiefer Smiley, made 18 saves and finished with the win before he was taken out in favor of Matt Zenzola, who stopped seven shots. The IceGators totaled 17 minutes in penalty time with six minors and one major and went 2-for-4 on the power play. Kyle Rank rejected 25 shots on goal for Peoria. The Rivermen totaled 25 minutes in penalty time with five minors and one major and went 1-for-4 on the power play.
