Louisiana penalty kill dominates in 7-4 defeat of Columbus

The Louisiana IceGators' penalty kill was superb, as Louisiana survived multiple penalties to beat the Columbus Cottonmouths, 7-4.

The IceGators were led by Kirk Byczynski, who registered one goal and one assist. Byczynski scored on the power play 1:27 into the third period to make the score 5-3 Louisiana. Shawn McNeil assisted on the tally.

Referees had their hands full with a major incident at 9:47 into the third period. Four fighting penalties were dished out along with two game misconducts.

Both goalies were tossed from the game during the major incident in the third period.

The Louisiana penalty box was a popular destination as the team totaled eight minors and three majors for 41 minutes in penalty time. The IceGators surpassed its season average of 19.0 penalty minutes per game. Louisiana excelled on the penalty kill, not giving up a single goal in six chances. The IceGators surpassed their usual scoring output this season. This season, Louisiana averages 3.5 goals per contest. The IceGators put 40 shots on net during the contest, more than the 28.1 they average per game.

Louisiana additionally got points from McNeil, who also grabbed one goal and one assist, Ron Cramer, who also finished with one goal and one assist, and Jordan Braid, who also had one goal and one assist. Louisiana also had goals scored by Jeff Grant, Bret Peppler, and Chris Wilson, who each put in one. In addition, Louisiana received assists from Jeremy Boyer, who had two, Adam Stuart, who had four, and Greg Brown, Tyler Lyon, and Matt Robertson, who each chipped in one.

Columbus racked up the penalties in the contest, and ended with eight minors and three majors for 41 minutes in penalty time. The Cottonmouths had been averaging 25.0 minutes in penalties per game. By firing 31 shots on goal, Columbus exceeded the 26.8 shots it averages per game this year.

The Cottonmouths were helped by Jordan Draper, who registered one goal. Draper scored 12:34 into the third period to make the score 6-4 Louisiana. Levi Lind picked up the assist. Columbus also got points from Preston Shupe, who also racked up one goal and one assist to lead the team in points. Others who scored for Columbus included Neilsson Arcibal and Jason Gray, who scored one goal each. Other players who recorded assists for Columbus were Tom Maldonado, who had one.

Kiefer Smiley recorded 27 saves for Louisiana. The IceGators registered two goals on six power play opportunities. Louisiana ran into serious disciplinary problems during the contest, and Smiley was ejected from the game. Columbus' Curtis Martinu stopped 33 shots out of the 39 that he faced. For the Cottonmouths, Martinu was ejected from the game.
