Louisiana uses early goal to top Mississippi RiverKings, 2-1

The Louisiana IceGators took the lead against Mississippi RiverKings in the first period and maintained it until the end of the game to secure a tight 2-1 victory.

Chris Wilson provided Louisiana with the game-winning tally when he scored 1:23 into the the first period.

The IceGators' Kiefer Smiley was a brick wall in net, as he came up with 33 saves and let only one puck past him. Smiley certainly lowered his goals against average, which was 3.14 entering the contest.

Louisiana pulled out the victory even though it was hit with 12 penalty minutes.

The IceGators had trouble converting on the power play advantage, managing just one goal on nine chances.

Louisiana was helped by Jeff Grant, who racked up one goal. Grant scored on the power play 13:44 into the first period to make the score 2-0 Louisiana. A slashing penalty on Dan McWhinney had put the IceGators on the power play. Shawn McNeil assisted on the tally. In addition, Louisiana received assists from Jeremey Boyer, who had one.

Mississippi RiverKings did not reach the goal total it has come to expect this season. Mississippi RiverKings averages 3.1 goals per game. Mississippi RiverKings forced Louisiana goalie Smiley to work between the pipes, taking 34 shots.

Mississippi RiverKings was led by Matt Whitehead, who scored the team's only goal. Whitehead scored on the power play 19:37 into the second period to make the score 2-1 Louisiana. Mississippi RiverKings had taken the advantage when the IceGators' Tyler Barr got sent off for interference. Mike Grace provided the assist.

McWhinney rejected 21 shots on goal for Mississippi RiverKings. Mississippi RiverKings incurred 18 minutes in penalty time with nine minors.
