Huntsville rides Genoe to victory over Mississippi Surge, 3-1

Kevin Genoe had a standout game with 30 saves, and the Huntsville Havoc beat Mississippi Surge 3-1.

Huntsville was led by Eric Alexander, who tallied one goal. Alexander scored on the power play 17:09 into the second period to make the score 2-1 Huntsville. The Havoc earned a power play opportunity when Bill Baker was put in the box for hooking. Stuart Stefan provided the assist.

Huntsville racked up the penalties in the contest, and ended with seven minors and two majors for 24 minutes in penalty time. The Havoc surpassed its season average of 19.0 penalty minutes per game. Huntsville stifled Mississippi Surge's power play, and did not give up a single goal while down a man. The Havoc relied on a core group of players for most of their offense, as Leland Fidler, Mike Gurtler and Nick Lazorko took 18 of the team's 26 shots.

In addition, Huntsville received assists from Paul Kurceba, who had one and Dominic Osman, who had two.

Mississippi Surge was often in penalty trouble, totaling eight minors and two majors for 26 minutes in penalty time. Mississippi Surge had been averaging 18.0 minutes in penalties per game. Mississippi Surge relied on a core group of players for most of its offense, as Joe Tolles, Jordan Peddle and Jarkko Leppanen took 18 of the team's 31 shots. Mississippi Surge's offense was helped by the efforts of its defensemen, who managed to put 13 shots on net during the game.

Mississippi Surge was led by Justin MacDonald, who scored the team's only goal. MacDonald scored short handed 8:36 into the first period to make the score 1-0 Mississippi Surge. Mississippi Surge found itself down a man on Kyle Fletcher's roughing. Peddle picked up the assist.

Huntsville registered one goal on six power play opportunities. Mississippi Surge's Dan Clarke stopped 23 shots out of the 25 that he faced. Mississippi Surge registered zero goals on five power play opportunities.
