Huge game by Mele boosts Columbus over Louisiana, 8-6

The Columbus Cottonmouths' Steve Mele had a big offensive game, scoring four goals and contributing one assist in his team's 8-6 win over the Louisiana IceGators.

Mele got on the scoresheet 15:07 into the second period. He then added goals at 19:28 into the second, at 14:34 into the third, and at 19:40 into the third.

Columbus forced its penalty killing units to work especially hard during the game, picking up five minors and two majors for 40 minutes in penalty time. The Cottonmouths surpassed its season average of 27.0 penalty minutes per game. Columbus bested its season scoring average. This season, the Cottonmouths average 2.9 goals per contest. Columbus relied on a core group of players for most of its offense, as Tory Allan, Mele and Tom Maldonado took 18 of the team's 35 shots.

Columbus additionally got points from Maldonado, who also racked up one goal and three assists and Matt Gingera, who also had one goal and one assist. Others who scored for Columbus included Neilsson Arcibal and Dan Bremner, who each put in one. Other players who recorded assists for Columbus were Kyle Johnson, who had one and Jordan Braid and Jordan Draper, who each chipped in two.

The Louisiana penalty box was a popular destination as the team totaled eight minors and two majors for 46 minutes in penalty time. The total exceeded the 17.0 minutes per game the IceGators had been spending in the box. Louisiana found the back of the net more times than it usually has this season. The IceGators average 3.5 goals per game.

Louisiana was led by Jeremey Boyer, who finished with one goal and three assists. Boyer scored short handed 6:59 into the second period to make the score 3-1 Louisiana. The IceGators were on a disadvantage when Peter Cintala went off the ice for cross checking. Louisiana also got points from Chris Wilson, who also registered one goal and two assists. Louisiana also had goals scored by Shawn McNeil and Matthew Robertson, who scored two goals each. In addition, Louisiana received assists from Kirk Byczynski, who had two and Tyler Lyon, Jake Trask, and Adam Stuart, who contributed one a piece.

Andrew Loewen recorded 20 saves for the Cottonmouths. Columbus registered three goals on eight power play opportunities. Kiefer Smiley rejected 27 shots on goal for Louisiana. The IceGators registered two goals on five power play opportunities.
