Mount Forest beats Mitchell 7-4 as Davis gets hat trick

The Mitchell Hawks could not stop the Mount Forest Patriots' Ben Davis, who tallied a hat trick in a 7-4 win.

Davis' first goal came 1:08 into the first period. He then added goals at 7:56 into the first and at 5:16 into the second.

Mount Forest forced Mitchell's goaltenders to work without much rest, getting 36 shots and forcing 29 saves. Zach Poole made seven stops and Chris Wallace made 22. The Patriots excelled on the penalty kill, not giving up a single goal in three chances. Mount Forest surpassed its usual scoring output this season. The Patriots have scored at the pace of 4.5 goals per game during the current campaign.

Mount Forest additionally got points from Trevor Hughson, who also tallied two goals and three assists to lead the team in points. Others who scored for Mount Forest included Doug Costanzo and Matt Taylor, who scored one goal each. In addition, Mount Forest received assists from Justin Graham, who had four and Nathan Woodard, Luke Richardson, and Matt Marshall, who contributed one a piece.

The Hawks made Mount Forest's goalies to work in net, taking 32 shots and forcing 28 saves. John Nixon made 24 stops and Cole Wardlaw made four. Mitchell avoided man-down situations well, racking up one major for five minutes in penalty time. The Hawks ended up below its season average of 24.0 penalty minutes per game.

Mitchell was led by Blake Pickering, who tallied three goals. Mitchell also got a goal from Brett Johnson (AP) as well. Other players who recorded assists for Mitchell were Ethen Adair, Wil Marcy, Matt Van DeWalle, Joe Gioia, and Brett Stacey, who each chipped in one.

The Patriots totaled 11 minutes in penalty time with three minors and one major and had no power play opportunities. Mount Forest ran into serious disciplinary problems during the contest, and Dean Nixon was ejected from the game. For the Hawks, Scott Fries was ejected from the game.
