Mount Forest uses shootout to best Walkerton, 6-5 (2-0 SO)

Three periods of regulation and an overtime session were not enough to settle matters as the Mount Forest Patriots defeated the Walkerton Hawks in a shootout 6-5 (2-0 SO).

The shootout lasted for four attempts between the teams. Mount Forest also got a shootout goal from Justin Graham.

The Patriots overcame a three-goal deficit to capture the victory. Mount Forest trailed 5-2 after a goal by Walkerton's Brandon Lamothe at 14:17 in the second period. The Patriots tied things up at 5-5 on a goal by Shawn Lantz at 16:01 in the third period.

Mount Forest kept the Hawks' goalie busy throughout the game, and Jake Ireland made 38 saves on 44 shots.

The Patriots were led by Trevor Hughson, who racked up one goal and one assist. Hughson scored 7:25 into the second period to make the score 3-2 Walkerton. Dean Nixon provided the assist. Mount Forest also got points from Doug Costanzo, who also grabbed one goal and one assist. Mount Forest also had goals scored by Luke Richardson and Mitch Betts, who each put in one. Other players who recorded assists for Mount Forest were Graham, Devin Williams, and Cody Wright, who contributed one a piece.

Walkerton forced Patriots' goalies to work all game long, getting 33 shots and forcing 28 saves. Cole Wardlaw made eight stops and John Nixon made 20.

Others who scored for Walkerton included David Gallo, Calvin Penney, and Lauchlin Elder, who scored one goal each. More assists for Walkerton came via Ryan Hamelin, who had one and Tyler Snyder and Drew Davidson, who contributed two a piece.

Mount Forest incurred four minutes in penalty time with two minors. The Hawks incurred 14 minutes in penalty time with seven minors.
