Wescast Complex Rink    Fri, Jan 10, 2014

Three periods of regulation and an overtime session were not enough to settle matters as the Wingham Ironmen defeated the Mitchell Hawks in a shootout 2-1 (1-0 SO).

The shootout featured six attempts between both teams.

Wingham was led by goalie Ben Nelson, who finished with 27 saves while allowing one goal. Nelson managed to improve on his goals against average, which stood at 2.8 prior to the game.

Referees had their hands full with a major incident at 1:37 into the third period. Three fighting penalties were dished out along with two game misconducts.

The Ironmen were held below their usual level of production. Wingham puts an average of 5.2 pucks into the net per game.

The Hawks did not reach the goal total they have come to expect this season. Mitchell averages 3.3 goals per game. The Hawks were forced to rely heavily on their penalty kill unit throughout the game, as they racked up 24 penalty minutes.

Mitchell was led by Blake Pickering, who scored the team's only goal. Pickering scored 16:58 into the third period to make the score 1-1. Jerry Ennet provided the assist.
